Western
Australia encompasses a third of the area of the Australian continent.
It is the last frontier for the nuclear industry - no uranium mines
have ever gone into full production in Western Australia.
A major exploration boom is now under way across Western Australia, prompted by the surging price of uranium and a co-ordinated attempt by the industry to paint itself as the saviour of climate change. While the Carpenter Government remains opposed to uranium mining, it is allowing this wave of exploration to occur, and a host of companies are proclaiming that uranium mining is only a matter of time.
The people of WA express
their anti-nuclear feelings in a variety of ways. From moves in state
parliament, support for mine blockades, Nuclear Free Zone declarations
to street theatre, the movement for a nuclear free future has a strong
base in the local community.
- Uranium
Mining
Uranium is found right across WA, from the Kimberley region of the
far north-west down to the Goldfields east of Kalgoorlie. The heaviest
concentrations are found around the large Yeelirrie
deposit in the mid-west, and it is here that many of WA's most advanced
proposals are found.
